About MKSA

Welcome!

MKSA provides a full range of early childhood and school age services. Early intervention evaluation, educational, therapeutic and support services are available for eligible children and their families throughout Long Island (Nassau County, Suffolk County), Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Manhattan. Preschool related services are available in Nassau and Suffolk counties. MKSA also provides school age services in many districts throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Private pay services are available as well.

MKSA’s staff and providers have more than 25 years of experience working with children with developmental delays and their families. As one of the largest agencies in the area, MKSA provides a high level of quality services, using caring dedicated professionals. We support each child’s developmental potential by providing individualized programs tailored to each child’s specific needs. Our goal is to provide prompt, accurate evaluations, effective treatment for children’s developmental and educational concerns, and support for the entire family.

All children grow and learn at different rates. However, if your child isn’t doing what other kids the same age are doing, you should ask questions…and get answers! While differences in rates of development are often normal, sometimes a child needs extra help. Getting early help for your child is a way to ensure that your child will reach his or her highest developmental potential. If you have any questions about your child’s development, we are here for you. Our caring, dedicated professionals are all NYS licensed and/or certified with many years of experience in working with children, and can answer questions and guide you regarding your child’s development. Welcome to MKSA! In our Plainview facility, we have a large, beautiful classroom with a sensory gym. We also have private rooms for speech therapy sessions. In our private viewing room, parents can watch and listen to their child’s therapy session. We also have a comfortable waiting room where you and your child’s siblings may relax while your child receives services.

Autism Spectrum Disorder

ABA Services

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is considered the treatment of choice for autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

MKSA continues to be a leader in the area of bringing standardized testing and ABA services to early intervention. Our agency has some of the area’s most experienced and respected diagnosticians. Experts at ruling out ASD, they use the most current testing procedures, informal observation and clinical judgment, and take the time to make sure they have a complete picture of your child.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) focuses on the principles that explain how learning takes place. Positive reinforcement is one such principle. When a behavior is followed by some sort of reward, the behavior is more likely to be repeated. Through decades of research, the field of behavior analysis has developed many techniques for increasing useful behaviors and reducing those that may cause harm or interfere with learning. ABA is the use of these techniques and principles to bring about meaningful and positive changes in behavior. ABA therapy sessions often involve one-on-one interaction between the ABA provider and the child. These techniques can be used in structured situations such as the classroom as well as in everyday situations.

Indicators of ASD

ASDs are often diagnosed between the ages of 18 months and 3 years. Studies indicate that autism is four times more common in boys than girls, and there is a higher risk if a sibling is diagnosed with autism.

An evaluation for an Autism Spectrum Disorder should be considered if your child aged 14-15 months and older is demonstrating some of the following indicators of ASD:
– Rarely looks you in the eye for more than a second or two, or seems to be avoiding eye contact
– Doesn’t babble/make meaningful gestures by 1 year
– Does not speak one word by 16 months
– Does not combine two words by 2 years
– Does not respond to name when called
– Loses language or social skills
– Doesn’t play with toys appropriately
– Excessively lines up toys or objects
– No pointing to indicate what he wants or to show you an object of interest
– Does not imitate what others do (clapping, “so big”, blowing kisses, etc.)
– Lack of social-emotional reciprocity (i.e. limited or no back-and-forth conversation, reduced sharing of interests/emotions, failure to initiate and respond to social interactions)
– Abnormal body language; lack of understanding and use of gestures; lack of facial expressions and nonverbal communication
– Difficulty in developing, maintaining and understanding relationships; absence of interest in peers
– Repetitive motor movement or use of objects (hand flapping, repetitive jumping, spinning objects, lining up objects, repeatedly throwing toys to floor)
– Repeatedly vocalizes parts of TV shows, books, or previously heard conversations (this could be immediately after hearing them or days later)
– Insistence on sameness, inflexible adherence to routines (i.e. difficulties with transitions, need to take same route or eat same food every day)

Our ABA Teachers

Our ABA staff are Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) or Board Certified Associate Behavior Analysts (BCaBA). Our ABA team leaders are all experienced special education teachers with years of education, training, and practical experiences in developing programs and working with children and their families. Our ABA providers are all certified special education teachers who have fulfilled the necessary criteria for effective teaching on an ABA team. These requirements include coursework and supervised hands-on training in the field. This expertise is combined with a genuine concern for families and an understanding of the challenges they face and the benefits they can enjoy from these services. Our providers love their work, care about what they do and are dedicated in their efforts to work with every child as an individual.

What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are terms for a group of complex neurological disorders. In 2013, with the publication of the DSM-5 all autism disorders were merged into one overall diagnosis of ASD.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by social interaction difficulties, communication challenges and a tendency to engage in repetitive behaviors. However, symptoms and their severity vary widely across these three core areas. It may result in relatively mild challenges for someone on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum. For others, symptoms may be more severe, when repetitive behaviors and lack of spoken language interfere with everyday life. The basic symptoms of autism can be accompanied by other medical conditions and challenges, which can also vary widely in severity. Although it is best to begin intervention as soon as possible, the benefits of therapy can continue throughout life. Research shows the most effective treatment for children with ASD is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

Responsibilities include:
Coordinating and monitoring all early intervention services in accordance with the IFSP, attending IFSP meetings, coordinating transitions to CPSE, communicating with families and other early intervention disciplines, documenting and maintaining written records and reports regarding OSC activities, and following mandatory guidelines. May work from home, but must be available for home visits and to attend meetings.

Early Intervention Evaluations and Services (Birth to 3 years)

All children ages birth to 3 are entitled to a free evaluation under the New York State Early Intervention Program (EIP) to determine if they are eligible for services. The NYS EIP follows a developmental model, which demonstrates whether a child is reaching milestones as compared to peers of the same age. A developmental delay means a child has not reached age-appropriate milestones in one or more developmental areas. If the delay is significant enough to meet eligibility criteria, services are available at no out-of-pocket cost.

A multi-disciplinary EI evaluation assesses five basic areas of development, and determines if a child has a measurable delay in any of these areas:
Communication (using and understanding language)
Cognitive (thinking, learning, intellectual ability, problem-solving)
Physical (gross/fine motor skills such as walking and handling objects)
Social (relating to other, handling and expressing their own emotions)
Adaptive (self-help skills such as feeding and dressing)

In addition, your child may receive one or more of the following evaluations, depending on your area of concern:
Speech & Language
Audiological
Special Education
Physical Therapy
Occupational Therapy
Psychological

An additional evaluation called a diagnostic evaluation is available to diagnose or rule out Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Our agency has some of the area’s most experienced and respected evaluators and diagnosticians. MKSA uses a variety of tools to evaluate your child, and we take the time to make sure we have a complete picture of your child.

The results of these evaluations, along with information you provide, will determine if your child qualifies for services. When a child is determined eligible, the types of services are determined at a meeting that includes the parent, evaluator and a representative from the municipality. An Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) outlines all the details of the services your child will receive, in addition to the goals you would like him/her to achieve.

MKSA provides a full range of evaluation, therapeutic and support services under EI, and services are provided wherever your child is: your home, day care, or any community center. We also offer services in our Plainview clinic, with a private viewing room for parents/caregivers to observe therapy sessions. Services are provided throughout Long Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Manhattan.

If a child is determined eligible, EI services may include:
– Special Instruction (services provided to enhance a child’s development of learning, play and social skills)
– Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) (a systematic behavior approach in treating children, primarily used in children with autism)
– Speech/Language Therapy (helps children with expressive (spoken) and/or
receptive (understanding) language delays)
– Feeding Therapy (helps children who have motor difficulty with chewing or swallowing)
– PROMPT (helps a child develop motor control and proper oral muscular movements)
– Physical Therapy (helps develop large muscle skills needed for crawling, walking and climbing)
– Occupational Therapy (helps develop fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, self-help skills, sensory and motor development)
– Social Work (provides information, emotional support and assistance for family members in accessing community resources)
– Counseling (works with a child or members of the family on issues surrounding or impacted by the child’s developmental delay)
– Family Training (teaches parents and caregivers strategies for helping their child achieve success in daily activities)
– Service Coordination (helps the family navigate the early intervention system)

Bilingual services are available in many languages.

At MKSA, we believe in putting the child and their family’s needs first. We understand the important role of families in the life of a child with special needs. While our teachers and therapists work with the child, family members are included in a child’s therapy, and every effort is made to accommodate each family’s busy schedule. We work tirelessly to enhance each child’s development and to respond quickly and sensitively to families’ concerns.

The EIP is for children less than three years of age, and is a public program funded by New York State and local counties. All children must be referred to the EIP. MKSA is an approved provider of EIP services and is under contract with Nassau County, Suffolk County, and the New York City Department of Mental Health. All services under the EIP are provided at no out-of-pocket cost to families, but health insurance may be accessed. Eligibility for the EIP can be determined only by State approved evaluators under contract with the County. If a child is found eligible for the EIP, all services are identified in collaboration with the family and must be authorized by the County, which will arrange for service providers to deliver services authorized by the municipality. For services provided in a community setting that require a fee, the parent is responsible for paying those fees. Parents may refer their child by calling their local EIP: NYC (311), Nassau (516-227-8661), Suffolk (631-853-3100), or MKSA can assist with the referral.

Preschool Related Services
(3-5 years)

Every NYS school district has a Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE), a program that provides services to children from 3-5 years of age who have, or are at risk of having a developmental disability. Preschool evaluations are conducted to determine whether or not a child has a disability and is eligible for preschool special educational and/or related therapeutic services. If a child is found eligible for preschool services, the family acts as a member of the school district’s CPSE to determine appropriate services. MKSA can answer questions about development and help you with the referral process.

If a child qualifies for services, a meeting that includes the parent, evaluation representative, and representative from your local school district will be conducted where an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed. An IEP outlines all the details of the services your child will receive, in addition to the goals you would like him/her to achieve.

MKSA provides preschool related services, which can be delivered at your home, your child’s preschool/daycare, or at our clean, beautiful Plainview facility.

Preschool Related Services can include:
– Speech/Language Therapy (helps children with expressive (spoken) and/or receptive (understanding) language delays)
– Feeding Therapy (helps children who have motor difficulty with chewing or swallowing)

– Counseling (works with a child or members of the family on issues surrounding or impacted by the child’s developmental delay)

The NYS Education Department (NYSED), Office of Special Education oversees a statewide preschool special education program with school districts, municipalities, approved providers and parents. Evaluations and specially planned individual or group instructional services or programs are provided to eligible children who have a disability that affects their learning. Funding for these special education programs and services is provided by municipalities and the State.

Private Pay

MKSA’s private pay therapeutic and educational services are available for children any age in the following situations:

– Child not found eligible for one of our state-funded programs
– Child not enrolled in one of our state-funded programs

Our professionals have extensive experience working with school age children, and are familiar with core curriculum requirements. We supplement staffing needs in public and private school as well as provide home-based services when deemed appropriate.

Outside Events

The Early Intervention Therapist and Teacher Online Cooperative (EITTOC) offers online classes that can be used for the professional development hours needed for EI. It also has courses specific to evaluators, different diagnosed conditions, and required trainings such as sexual harassment and child abuse. This video discusses the important role a parent has in developing their child’s IFSP. It describes what the IFSP is and how it is created. It also discusses strategies parents can use to make sure their IFSP fits their family, priorities, and outcomes for their child.

MKSA Office Calendar

MKSA 2022-2023 Calendar – Days of Operation for Daily Instruction

Early Intervention:
Services can be provided seven days per week, weekends and holidays.
(For EI Groups see below)

Preschool and School Age:
Services are provided per the school district calendar or the calendar of the school the child attends.

**Please note MKSA is open on Veteran’s Day, but per NYS regulations, preschool services cannot be provided on that day.

Dear MKSA,

I am writing this letter to express how happy my family has been with our son’s Speech Pathologist. She has been nothing short of amazing since she started working with our son. She has put her whole heart and soul into her time with him. The patience that she has for her students is remarkable. She has a gift that is not seen often, and goes above and beyond for her students.

From the beginning, our therapist’s communication with us, suggestions and strategies have been amazing. She has been able to think outside of the box for our son on many occasions. She has worked not only on his speech, but feeding difficulties, chewing difficulties, and choking issues (he is also diagnosed with Moderate Oral Dysphasia). Having a child who we have had to do the Heimlich maneuver on more than once due to chewing is a very scary situation. She has been compassionate and patient in helping him overcome this difficulty. Her calm nature has been pleasantly transferred to us so that we are not constantly nervous when he is eating, and we have been able to significantly increase the size we cut his food.

When the therapist started working with our son, he barely spoke 3 words and was still drinking from a bottle. In a short time, she “worked her magic” as I often say, and had him drinking from a straw and increased his expressive language. She has always made it a point to stay in constant communication so that we could be sure that skills are transferred home.

As a clinician and supervisor in the field, I supervise many therapists on a weekly basis. I can count on one hand how many of them come close to what she has been. I know how critical it is to have a therapist that truly connects with your child, and she has done just that. She has worked with him in both school and our home, and has been extraordinary. My son’s expressive language and feeding difficulties have come so far in such a short time; it is truly amazing.

Our therapist is truly an asset to those she works with and shows an extraordinary passion for children. My family will be forever grateful for having the opportunity and gift of, having her work with our son.

Dear MKSA,

I wanted to thank you for all the support and help you gave my son Colin and myself when he attended the clinic for OT services. He came twice weekly and worked with Marie. While Colin had always given me a difficult time when it came to any fine motor activity such as writing or manipulating small items, as it was challenging for him, he eagerly did these activities for Marie! She made these things fun and over the course of the year I saw so much progress that I never dreamt was possible. It was an amazing thing to watch my child come to you with such a delay and over time to see him grow and meet all his IEP goals. The support, care and guidance Marie gave me was amazing. After each session she made sure to speak with me and we worked together with things I could do at home to support what she was doing. In addition to him being able to write his letters and complete tasks (which I was hoping he would do), more importantly he became more confident in himself and even his preschool teacher made note of the change in the classroom. Colin would eagerly share with his teacher how “Miss Marie” showed him to hold his pencil or make each shape and letter. He engaged in activities which he previously would have avoided and this helped him get so much more out of the classroom experience. I owe your agency so much for making such an impact on Colin and I will forever be grateful for that!

Dear MKSA,

My son has received services since he was about 16 months old and I couldn’t be happier with MKSA! All of the staff, his therapists, and his coordinator take great care in the work that they do and truly care about our family. They were there every step of the way as what started out as a “delay” was later diagnosed as ASD. I know I can call his therapists and coordinator anytime I have any questions, and they will be there to help. They also are great at communicating among each other, and in keeping me informed so that I never feel that my child is falling through the cracks or just a number. I can tell they all want to see my son reach his greatest potential. He has received speech, physical therapy, and ABA. He will soon be aging out of Early Intervention, and I can honestly say he has surpassed my expectations and grown to be such an active, intelligent, happy little boy. I am so thankful for everything MKSA has done.

Transition Planning

Transitioning from Early Intervention (EI) to Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE)

It’s hard to believe your child is approaching his/her third birthday and will be aging out of the Early Intervention Program. If you still have concerns about your child’s development, Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) is the program that will continue to address your child’s needs. CPSE is the program for three to five year olds.

Your Early Intervention Ongoing Service Coordinator (OSC) will schedule time to meet with you usually around your child’s second birthday to review the transition process. That may seem to be very far in advance but there is a time line that needs to be adhered to. At that meeting with your OSC, you will make a decision to notify your local school district that you might be registering your child for a CPSE initial evaluation in the near future. Even if you decide not to notify the school district in advance, you can still register your child for CPSE. The optional notification to the school district is due between age 26 months and 33 months depending on the month of the year in which your child is born. Actual referral to the CPSE, which is registering your child for CPSE evaluations, must be made by the parent or guardian, should take place no later than 3 months prior to your child’s third birthday.

To refer your child to your school district for CPSE you will be asked to bring with you your child’s birth certificate, immunization record, and proof of residency. Your school district will let you know exactly what they require. Once you submit this to the district you will be asked to select a 4410 evaluator/program provider to do new evaluation, and sign consent for these evaluations to take place. For all children a psychological evaluation, a social history and observation are conducted. In addition, an evaluation is conducted in any area of concern.

Once the evaluations are completed you will receive a copy of the evaluations along with notice from the school district that an Initial CPSE meeting has been scheduled. This meeting must take place within thirty days of when you signed consent for the evaluations. At that meeting, which takes place in your home school district, the evaluations will be reviewed and a determination of eligibility will be made. If your child is eligible for CPSE services he/she will be classified as a preschool child with a disability. Your child’s needs will be reviewed, goals will be formed, services will be decided upon and an Individual Education Plan (IEP) will be made. You will decide if you want your child to start receiving services through CPSE as soon as possible or remain in the Early Intervention Program until they age out (either August 31 or December 31, depending on their date of birth).

If your child does not qualify for CPSE services this will be discussed with you. Your child would no longer be eligible for the Early Intervention Program past the day prior to her third birthday if she does not qualify for CPSE services or if you chose not to register for CPSE services.
